The IX Convection Permitting Climate Modeling Workshop

The IX Convection Permitting Climate Modeling Workshop

by

Workshop Theme: Extreme Precipitation in Coastal Cities

As tropical coastal cities face growing threats from extreme precipitation and flooding, the need to better quantify and manage climate risk is becoming urgent. Climate scientists, policymakers, infrastructure planners, and stakeholders across sectors must work together to strengthen urban resilience in the face of a changing climate. The Convection-Permitting Climate Modeling (CPCM) Workshop is the premier international forum dedicated to advancing high-resolution climate modeling, particularly focusing on extreme precipitation and convective processes.

The upcoming 9th CPCM Workshop will be held in Asia for the first time, hosted in-person at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology from 5–7 August 2025. This is especially timely, as climate change is intensifying the need to better predict extreme rainfall in tropical coastal cities, where storms are most intense and hardest to forecast.

The workshop will focus on three critical themes:

  1. Assessing Current Capabilities and Gaps
Evaluate the current status, knowledge gaps, and limitations in forecasting and projecting extreme precipitation events in tropical coastal cities.
  2. Advancing High-resolution Modeling and AI integration
Review cutting-edge research in high-resolution, convection permitting models, including new physical processes representations and the integration of AI techniques to enhance predictive capabilities.
  3. Defining Future Research Priorities
Identify and define research priorities to improve the predictive capabilities of weather and climate models, especially for precipitation extremes affecting megacities in the context of a changing climate.
